How to Save a Modern Design from Going Cold

Many people are drawn to a more modern sensibility in their homes and offices because of its simple, functional nature. One of the key beliefs behind the modern design is the idea that “form follows function.” In other words, the design of all furnishings and decorative objects should have a purpose, if it doesn't, it can go. Modern style makes for a perfect decorating choice for those who like simple, uncluttered spaces with clean lines and a lack of fuss, but adopting such a less is more design style runs the risk of feeling cold or less than inviting if careful attention isn't paid to design choices.

Color, makes up for a lot of the visual space in a modern design. Opt for a mix of light and dark neutrals pulling from natural elements. Rely on colors that are present in natural materials such as wood tone, and grain, stone, leather, and organic textiles to add warmth and interest in your space. This makes mixing color selections a breeze! Someone once told me, "if it's found in nature, it probably goes together". Dark neutrals like charcoal gray, dark brown, deep gold, navy blue, and black play effortlessly with tones of white, cream, and tan. Mix up cool and warm tones for instant surge of warmth and interest.

Texture, one of my favorite elements in design, is a key element to consider when preventing your modern space from going cold. Play with your textiles, mixing knotty tweeds, soft cottons, leathers, and linens for a foolproof way to warm up your space. An interesting knit on an area rug, or a structural chandelier are both great, unexpected locations for added texture. Also, remember texture doesn’t just have to come from what we place in a room. It can come from the room itself. Think about texture in your modern space before you even consider furniture and accents leaving structural elements such as concrete, bricks, or, beams left exposed. Stone tiles, concrete surfaces, and textured wall finishes can all be fabulous ways to layer rough/raw materials into your design creating a striking contrast to the mix of softer fabric textures.

Let the natural light POUR in! I can't think of a better way to warm up a space than the wonderful warmth of natural light. Leaving those windows unadorned when possible will easily help showcase characteristics of a modern design, i.e. emphasis of horizontal and vertical lines and lack of fluff. Strategically placed exterior or interior greenery can add privacy if needed allowing you to leave your windows bare. If it's not feasible, choose window dressings that fall into a neutral color palette made from natural fibers or material. Look for options with a sheer finish to filter natural light into your space while still providing privacy. Not every room is equipped with ample sources for natural light, consider swapping out windows that are too small and replacing them with something better suited to let the light in. The addition of skylight, and glass interior doors, or walls can completely change the look and feel of a space. Embrace the light in your modern designs and in the end, you'll create a brighter more welcoming finished look.

Have fun, mix it up, layer on the texture, and embrace the light.
